Dubai has a reputation for luxury, but some of its best experiences cost little or nothing. Here are our favourite free and low-cost ways to see the city.

Free things to do

  • Watch the Dubai Fountain show at the foot of the Burj Khalifa in the evening.
  • Wander Al Fahidi Historical District — wind towers, quiet lanes, small galleries and cafés.
  • Browse the souks around the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira.
  • Spend a day at a public beach such as Kite Beach or the beach at JBR, with views of the Burj Al Arab and the Marina.
  • Walk the Dubai Marina promenade at sunset.

Almost free

  • Cross Dubai Creek by abra — the traditional wooden water taxis cost just a few dirhams and give you one of the best views in the city.
  • Use the Metro to get between the main areas cheaply. Buy a Nol card at any station.
  • Eat where residents eat — Deira, Karama and Al Satwa are full of affordable, excellent restaurants.

Money-saving tips

  • Visit in the cooler months and walk more — many sights are close together in old Dubai.
  • Carry a refillable water bottle.
  • Book attractions online in advance where discounts are offered.
  • A private guide for a half day can be good value for a family or small group, because the cost is shared.

Sample budget day

Morning walk through Al Fahidi, abra across the Creek, lunch in Deira, an afternoon at Kite Beach and the evening fountain show downtown. Explore Dubai or find a guide for an old-Dubai walking tour.
