If you love history, food and stories, skip the malls for two days. Old Dubai and neighbouring Sharjah — the UAE’s cultural capital — hold the country’s richest heritage, and they’re only a short drive apart.

Day 1: Old Dubai

Morning — Al Fahidi

Begin in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Explore the wind-tower houses and small museums, and join a cultural breakfast or talk to learn about Emirati traditions.

Midday — The creek by abra

Cross Dubai Creek by abra and watch the dhows loading cargo on the Deira side — just as traders did a century ago.

Afternoon — Souks and street food

Wander the Spice and Gold Souks, then follow your guide to Deira’s bakeries, juice stalls and traditional sweet shops.

Day 2: Sharjah

Morning — Heart of Sharjah

Explore the restored heritage area of Sharjah: coral-stone houses, courtyard museums and Souq Al Arsah, one of the oldest souks in the country.

Midday — Museum of Islamic Civilization

Spend a couple of hours in the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, with galleries on science, art and faith beneath a golden dome.

Evening — Al Noor Island and Al Majaz Waterfront

End with a walk around Khalid Lagoon: art and gardens on Al Noor Island, then the musical fountain at Al Majaz Waterfront.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly in both cities’ heritage areas, and especially throughout Sharjah.
  • Alcohol is not served in Sharjah.
  • Many museums close one day a week — your guide will plan the order.

Why go with a guide?

Heritage sites are where a good guide matters most: the stories behind each house, souk and object are what make them memorable. Find a heritage guide.
