Dubai began on the banks of its creek. Long before the skyscrapers, wooden dhows unloaded spices, textiles and pearls here — and they still do. Crossing by abra to the souks of Deira is the most authentic experience in the city.

The creek: where Dubai started
The creek divides Bur Dubai from Deira and was the heart of the pearling and trading economy that made Dubai a regional hub. Today, traditional dhows still load cargo along the Deira wharves, bound for ports across the Gulf, Iran, India and East Africa.
Riding an abra
Abras are small wooden water taxis that cross the creek constantly from early morning until late at night. The ride takes just a few minutes and costs very little — pay the driver on board. It’s the best value experience in Dubai.
The souks
Gold Souk
Hundreds of shops glitter with gold jewellery, from everyday pieces to elaborate bridal sets. Prices are based on the day’s gold rate per gram plus a making charge for the craftsmanship.
Spice Souk
Sacks of saffron, frankincense, dried limes, rose buds and spices fill the lanes. It’s a feast for the senses — and a good place to pick up gifts.
Textile Souk
On the Bur Dubai side, near the abra station, you’ll find fabrics, pashminas and souvenirs.
How to shop like a local
- For gold, ask for the weight, the gold rate and the making charge separately. The making charge is where there’s room to negotiate.
- Bargaining is expected in the spice and textile souks — be friendly, start lower and meet in the middle.
- Keep receipts and certificates for gold purchases.
When to go
Late afternoon into the evening is the best time: the heat eases, the souks are lively and the creek glows at sunset. Some shops close for a break in the early afternoon and on Friday mornings.
Combine it with
Start your walk in Al Fahidi, cross by abra, explore the souks and end with dinner on the creek.
